I am still unsure of what to call myself as I feel I havent established enough of a practice as of yet. However throughout these ten weeks I feel I have developed my understanding of the multitude of forms sound art can take and in this post will reflect on ideas I want to take… Continue reading Week 10: Artist statement?

IKLECTIK, In-grid: CHAIN
16 Nov 22 I recently visited this installation/performance/instrument presented at IKLECTIK. Made up of four input/output stations, the piece is organised as a loop representing a body obedient under continous labour in the digital realm. However, under strain the data being passed through the system degrades and breaks down. The non sentient machine quickly consumes… Continue reading IKLECTIK, In-grid: CHAIN
week 9: kitchen fridge
(in kitchen) find yourself in front of the fridge staring blankly at the door, take a breath (be aware of the yourself and the space) open the door / close your eyes take a breath (engaging your senses, consider whats changed) For this writing a text score task, I was inspired to develop the week… Continue reading week 9: kitchen fridge
Week 8: Hearing and Listening
I think the difference between the two is the level of engagement. We are always hearing (we can’t close our ears) but in day to day life truly actively listening can be difficult. I find myself often drifting between sounds becoming background to other sounds or thoughts, and conciously thinking about or noticing or being… Continue reading Week 8: Hearing and Listening

Cinthia Marcelle, Leitmotif 2011 presented as a projection on a big screen in one of the tanks at tate modern, it was paired directly opposite with another short film depicting a circular african tribal ritual. the films would alternate and the bench in the middle as well as acting as a seperator, encouraged stationary viewing from a… Continue reading Week 5: Gallery Visit
Week 4: Research and Writing Skills
I chose this quote not because its overly long or that wordy but because I thought it was ironic to talk about the ‘lofi’ movement and bands like Pavement or Sebadoh using this language. ‘A whole subgenre of indie (independent) rock sought to parlay the apparent veracity of rudimentary recording into an unpolished aesthetic of… Continue reading Week 4: Research and Writing Skills
researching Halim El-Dabh, The Expression of Zaar
Composed and exhibited in Cairo 1944, the piece predates Pierre Schaeffer’s coining of the term Musique Concrete in 1948. Using a wire recorder, El-Dabh took sounds from the street, specifically a public Zaar exorcism/healing ceremony. Then re-recording it onto magnetic tape he manipulated the sounds through reverb, voltage control, editing speed, echo etc. into a… Continue reading researching Halim El-Dabh, The Expression of Zaar
three keywords that are important to my practice/aspirations
Waves: As well as the obvious sound waves, I think there is an ebb and flow, peak and trough, give and take, breath in everything – music, art, life – which I hope to communicate through my work. Feelings when listening like the meditative drifting in and out of focus or the excitement of a… Continue reading three keywords that are important to my practice/aspirations
My initial interest in sound art and what it means to me
My initial interest in sound art is with experimental music and gallery installations. Learning to challenge and push the limits of music and even what music is using different techniques and technologies appeals to me now coming from a more classical background. Considering the use and acoustics of a space to present sound along with… Continue reading My initial interest in sound art and what it means to me
