Was given a blank A4 sheet of paper to create a graphic score. A daunting starting point with so many options, my mind was as blank as what I was staring at. Tata next to me had begun folding his paper so in a somewhat pretentious way to one-up him I began to rip the sheet in half. I liked the roughness of the torn edge so doubled it with pencil and doodled an added layer. However seeing where it was going and not wanting to rip 😉 off joy division, I stuck the paper together with the jagged edges out to create the shape I based the loose cycles on. I imagined each line as somesort of a track, all branching off and connected from one path. They all cycle at different lengths, phasing, interfering, rising and falling, growing and adding more tracks as the piece continues. Having been experimenting with the soma ether I think the cacophony of static noise it can produce would suit this well. The score brings together the contrasting natural waves, mountains, growth and cycles with technological static, noise inerference and circuits; themes which would be great to explore in the final piece.
