My initial idea is to play with light/image in relation to sound/noise. What is the experience of one in the absence of the other? Also what is a loud or noisy visual? and therefore is noise light or dark? I wish to explore these abstract dualities in an audiovisual installation whereby the sound is separated from the visual. It will link to my research into noise for my dissertation/audio-paper as ideas that emerge from that will inform my creative ideas.

To create the sound I will be continuing with my no-input improvisation practice but perhaps with a more compositional mindset. An approach similar to that of when I did the sound for screen module, rescoring an experimental short film with octophonic noise. This time, however I intend to just use a stereo set-up.

I am less sure of what to do for the visual half of the piece. Perhaps I could use different lights or lasers that vibrate, I could create an experimental short film like what I did for Gallery 46, I could explore different photographic methods, or even try my hand at animation or digital visual effects.

Equipment and space wise, if I am to go with what is initially in my head I would need a blacked out room, a projector and two loudspeakers. However I am aware of limitations and predict my ideas will evolve anyway.

A dream scenario would be being led into a pitch black, completely soundproofed room that you can’t tell its size. From hidden speakers harsh noise music erupts for a period. Then in silence, you watch a light show/video/images that respond to the previous noise. The room could be metallic and reverberant. It could be interesting to swap the sound and visual for which goes first for the next audience as they would provoke different responses. This style of exhibition and experiential art where you are led through a room is one that I’ve noticed is quite popular now. Ones I have been lucky to see include works by Kusama Yayoi, James Turrell, Olafur Eliason. All emphasising immersion and almost optical illusion. I also dream of going to New York to experience La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela’s Dream House.
