3) soma ether

Having just finished the radio module I was even more intrigued by the anti-radio I had not yet tried. Being fairly new to field recording itself I was excited to use something that could scratch the itch for noiser recordings. I have been reading Paul Hegarty’s ‘Noise/Music, A History’ and listening more to artists such a Merzbow and the Gerogerigegege redefining to me what can be music and artistic expression. Using Christina Kubisch’s electrical walks shown to us in first term as reference, I used the ether in various loactions such as on the tube; down the main road in Whitechapel especially the storefronts; all around my house; and best of all, the overground.

Thinking about deep listening is interesting in terms of the soma as you are hearing the unheard. If deep listening is “listening to everything all the time”, the soma goes beyond that. Its a tool that gives you access to another realm of sounds, sound events even. It uncovers how the electromagnetic spectrum of waves interacts with the sounds that surround us and ultimately us ourselves. The soma is a performative, inquisitive instrument. The act of recording something normally is already performative but going in blind, not being able to hear it acoustically for ourselves makes it an improvisation.
