I am still unsure of what to call myself as I feel I havent established enough of a practice as of yet. However throughout these ten weeks I feel I have developed my understanding of the multitude of forms sound art can take and in this post will reflect on ideas I want to take into my practice.
I feel I resonated the most with the Musique Concrete ideals of using recorded sound as raw material to form the basis of a composition. I see parallels in this and the idea of absolute music in western classical music with the use music as pure expression and no narrative.
I want to create abstract atmospheric pieces that reflect identity and place in society. As someone born and raised in London I feel intrinsically linked to the pulse and drive of the city and find beauty in the noise and want to explore that and the human condition through sound.
However I am careful not to become ego driven as I believe sound art and art in general should live and breathe as a part of culture and not as a seperate entity tied up in galleries or worse, auction houses. I aspire to create a dynamic and enveloping world in everything I produce – for the work to speak, not me. I feel a key part in ensuring this is collaboration especially in areas I have little experience in such as radio work, synthesis, improvisation and gallery installation.
